ABOUT P&R BENN

P & R Benn was established in February 1983 by Paul and Robin Benn when the mechanic brothers were given the opportunity to rent the workshop at Oakhurst Garage Cockermouth, from then owners John and Hazel Morgan.

They repaired cars and carried out MOT’s while building up their business until they were able to buy their own workshop; Paul at Oakhurst and Robin at Fairfleld Garage in Cockermouth.

As well as MOTs and repairs, Paul then expanded Oakhurst to include new and used car sales. The business continued to grow, and a second workshop was built on the Oakhurst site to accommodate.

The next generation then joined him when upon leaving school, Paul’s youngest son Andrew trained and qualified as a mechanic.

Paul had begun rallying as a hobby in the 80s driving minis and escorts and after a break he returned to the sport in 2000 with a Gp N Escort Cosworth and then a Gp A version. He then had the opportunity to re-build the ex-Colin McRae Focus WRC (Y4 FMC) and competed with the car for 3 years. Experience grew and the once motorsport hobby turned into a successful rally car preparation arm, alongside the core motor trade business.

2009 saw a unique opportunity to expand the facilities when Paul took the decision to build a bespoke modern garage workshop on the newly developing Mitchells Auction site only a few hundred metres from Oakhurst Garage. Initially, this would accommodate the motorsport arm of the business and free up much needed workshop space at Oakhurst. However in 2014, the decision was made to amalgamate business activities onto this new site bringing all skills together. The plan was to build a new MOT centre here, which would also be kitted out to test up to Class VII commercial vehicles and motor bikes, something which previously Paul had been unable to do. This facility was completed and opened for business in July 2015.

In addition to the modern workshop and office facilities, the premises also boasts a glass car showroom, a designated customer hospitality/waiting area and much needed outside space for the increased capacity to display new and used car and van sales.

Day to day running of the business is still very much under the watchful eye of Paul, but backed up by son Andrew in the workshop, wife Margaret in the office and a team of staff behind them.
